Late last year some clients came in who were looking for a custom made library and entertainment unit made in recycled Spotted Gum for their new home in Canberra.
We learnt that they were fond readers, historians, and passionate musicians with a large quantity of books! They wanted a piece that contributed warmth and character to their modern, north facing, light filled living room.
The clients’ primary requests were that they were keen to avoid the average looking entertainment unit and they wanted the library to be something long and grounding to suit the long open space. Based on this encouragingly open and exciting brief we got to work on what evolved to be a lovely collaborative design process.
We decided to combine the library with a credenza style piece that housed their musical equipment, CD’s and television. Looking more like a part of the library rather than a stand alone ‘entertainment unit.’
The tapered façade to the whole piece gave that grounding aesthetic needed for the space, and was perfect for the home of larger books and records.
The build came up really well, one of our recently graduated cabinetmakers Sam De Smeth got to test his skills and did really well with all the angles.
We recently went back to shoot some photos of the library, filled to the brim and looking quite at home. All were very happy with the outcome!
